These single colour batiks show the Buddha sitting in the lotus position, with one hand raised in a gesture called 'Abhaya mudra.'
The gesture shows the Buddha's fearlessness in the face of a potential enemy, and it is said that the Buddha performed this gesture immediately upon obtaining enlightenment. It is a symbol of peace, one of friendship, and the open palm gesture shows that the Buddha carries no weapons.
